Varian Medical Systems

Varian Medical Systems required specialist construction and refurbishment works to support the installation of Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machines used in the treatment of cancer. These projects needed to meet strict radiation protection standards while being delivered within live healthcare environments across the UK, including NHS Trusts, Health Boards and specialist veterinary centres.

Each scheme varied in scale and complexity, requiring careful coordination between architects, Trusts and specialist suppliers to ensure compliance, safety and long-term operational performance.

Rocare has constructed and refurbished radiotherapy bunkers for Varian Linear Accelerator installations in over 30 NHS Trusts across England, four Health Boards in Scotland, and two veterinary centres. Our works encompassed all aspects of conventional construction alongside the specialist requirements associated with radiation-controlled environments.

Working closely with architects from the earliest design stages, we ensured radiation protection specifications were fully integrated into each scheme. This included advising on and supplying lead-lined materials for radiotherapy, X-ray and CT rooms, as well as considering size constraints, finishes, architectural detailing and Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) recommendations.

Through our extensive and trusted supply chain, we supported Trusts and design teams in selecting the correct materials and products for each application. Every element was carefully analysed to ensure compliance with radiation protection standards while maintaining build quality and usability within clinical settings.

Our collaborative approach has helped streamline design decisions, reduce risk and ensure radiation protection requirements are met from concept through to completion.

Ongoing refurbishment works continuing into 2024 include projects at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, and hospitals in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle, Mount Vernon and Truro, among others—demonstrating Rocare’s continued commitment to delivering specialist healthcare environments nationwide.
